Software Developer – Job Description

Position Overview

DCE is seeking a Software Developer to join our team.  Software Developers at DCE work within an agile DevOps framework to build open source applications that sustainably meet unique customer needs to deliver cultural heritage and related content online:

  • Agile: We work in short cycles to deliver working software that meets customer needs.
  • DevOps: Every team member shares responsibility for the full software lifecycle including design, development, deployment, operations, and deprecation/migration/retirement.
  • Open Source: We believe sharing our work improves its quality and multiplies its impact.
  • Sustainable: Our solutions support content that will long outlast any single technology solution we deliver.
  • Cultural Heritage: Our work increases access to digital and digitized assets stewarded by our library, museum, archive, and other cultural heritage partners.

DCE builds solutions using open source tools, especially Blacklight, Samvera, Fedora, and Solr.  The majority of our solutions are built using Ruby on Rails; familiarity with other languages is also helpful, especially JavaScript and Java.  

Position Requirements

Preferred candidates will have the following experience or similar equivalents:

  • Ruby/Rails development experience
  • 1+ years practice using Test Driven Development (TDD) and continuous integration (CI) tools
  • Experience using version control and collaborative development tools (especially Git)
  • Familiarity with agile development practices
  • 2+ years professional experience developing and supporting web applications

Additional Qualifications

Experience in the following areas is not required; however, successful candidates should be willing to further develop skills in one or more of the following areas:

  • Open Source software development
  • Familiarity with JavaScript, Java, and/or other relevant languages
  • Configuration management and deployment engineering
  • DevOps practices including networking, security, and performance engineering
  • Accessibility/Usability/UI/UX Design
  • Requirements gathering and analysis including User Story Mapping
  • Coaching and Mentoring experience

Candidates with existing library, museum or archive experience; a degree in LIbrary Science, Computer Science, or related field; or similar backgrounds are particularly attractive candidates for the role.

Web Application Designer – Job Description

Position Overview

DCE is seeking a web application designer to join our team to work across design disciplines to help us refine all aspects of our product design and delivery, with a heavy focus on web design. 

We work within an agile DevOps framework to build open source applications that sustainably meet unique customer needs to deliver cultural heritage and related content online:

  • Agile: We work in short cycles to deliver working software that meets customer needs.
  • DevOps: Every team member shares responsibility for the full software lifecycle including design, development, deployment, operations, and deprecation/migration/retirement.
  • Open Source: We believe sharing our work improves its quality and multiplies its impact.
  • Sustainable: Our solutions support content that will long outlast any single technology solution we deliver.
  • Cultural Heritage: Our work increases access to digital and digitized assets stewarded by our library, museum, archive, and other cultural heritage partners.

  • Wireframing and mock-ups describing structure and design of web applications
  • Responsive and Accessible design
  • User feedback gathering and analysis
  • Proficiency with HTML, CSS, Javascript and related web technologies
  • Proficiency with design tools such as Adobe, Balsamiq, Zeplin
  • Agile development practices including collaborative development and version control
  • 2+ years professional experience designing web applications 

Additional Qualifications

Experience in the following areas is not required; however, successful candidates should be willing to further develop skills in one or more of the following areas:

  • Ruby, Rails and other web application development frameworks
  • Search engine optimization and Google Scholar integration
  • Print design including promotional materials and branding assets 
  • Identity and brand design
  • Coaching and mentoring experience

Candidates with applied experience in library, museum or archive contexts; a degree in Design or related disciplines; or similar backgrounds are particularly attractive candidates for this role.
